A Good Neighbour - Niassa Game Reserve

The Niassa Game Reserve in neighbouring Mozambique is the largest conservation area of the country with an area of 42,000 km2. It contains the greatest concentration of wildlife in Mozambique.

The river Ruvuma forms the northern boundary of the Niassa Reserve and the border with Tanzania. The reserve which consists of a core area of 22,000 km2 and a buffer area of an additional 20,000 km2 is the southern extension of the Selous miombo ecosystem. In contrast to the Selous there are a number of villages inside the protected area. This poses a particular challenge to its management. The Niassa Reserve is managed in a kind of public-private partnership, the major donor presently being Fauna & Flora International.
