Trans-frontier Conservation

The Selous – Niassa Wildlife Corridor of Tanzania shares the border with the Niassa Reserve in Mozambique on 176 km length following the course of Ruvuma River. Initiated in 1999 by committed wildlife officers cross-border cooperation on conservation grew organically and developed over the years. In 2007 the Regional Administrations and local Governments of Mtwara and Ruvuma of Tanzania and the Provincial Governments of Cabo Delgado and Niassa of Mozambique signed a MoU on cross-border cooperation to promote regional economic growth, development, the traditions of good neighbourliness and a peaceful environment. Thus, cross-border conservation was officially recognised and identified as one of the key areas for cooperation. Activities on the ground include the exchange and mutual support of research and of anti-poaching information, including joint patrols, and agreements about the utilisation of natural resources as well as the development of tourism.

Regional MoU and Annex 1 on Cross-border Cooperation from March 2007.

Minutes of the Joint Meeting between Governors of the Provinces of Niassa and Cabo Delgado (Mozambique) and Regional Commissioners of Ruvuma and Mtwara (Tanzania) in Lichinga, Dec 2008.
